Once Upon a Time in the (South) West…

Celine’s son Aidan suffered a stomach intolerance when he was young, so she set to work making homemade goodies he could eat - his favourite (of course) was her ice cream. As she made more and more, she fell in love with its complexity, it’s creativity and its idiosyncrasies. Her husband Christopher would suggest (from a safe distance) it mirrored her own personality.

However, the more they learnt about ice cream the more disappointed they became. In the main they found it was made using some unpleasant stuff, the word natural did not feature strongly. They were also disappointed by the shops and parlours selling it, generally old fashioned or ultra-modern. With a love of good design and architecture, they yearned for an environment to eat their ice cream somewhere timeless and beautifully designed.

So, they decided to do something about it. They both left their corporate property jobs and set out to start Jefferson’s. Celine was determined to create wonderful creative flavours made only of natural ingredients and organic milk. Christopher was determined to provide a shop that everyone would delight in, and a business that would thrive. Their daughter Hope did not suffer any stomach intolerances so promptly volunteered herself as chief ice cream taster.

They were also determined to do all of this in southwest London - where they had lived for 20-years – because let’s not be modest, southwest London rocks! After three years of planning, touring ice cream shops across Berlin, New York, and Dublin, and attending ice cream universities (yes, they exist!) their first nostalgic American style ice cream store opened in Balham in 2019.

Quickly outgrowing their tiny kitchen, a railway arch in Brixton followed in 2022, home to a second store and most importantly a large central kitchen. From here even more wonderful ice cream recipes could be made, and Jefferson’s could happily begin to supply the restaurants and delis that asked to serve their ice cream and tubs.

Our People

We love our team, they’re simply the best and they are a massive part of what makes Jefferson’s so special. We never worry about experience, in our view good people can learn most things well, instead we embrace people that fit with our culture. Our team are kind, fun, friendly, they love people and they’re genuinely proud of what they do. They take so much satisfaction from knowing that that scoop of Brookies & Cream and delicious Blowtorch Marshmallow hot chocolate they served may just have turned someone’s average day into a great day.

Whether it’s making ice cream in our kitchen in Brixton, driving our delivery van Jeff, or serving our customers in our stores, everyone is contributing to creating happiness. What could be better than that? It’s the very reason that Jefferson’s exists.

If you would like to enquire about joining our team, either at our stores or in our Brixton kitchen, we’d love to hear from you at hello@jeffersonsicecream.com
